A day at Dunnegan Park

You can spend a day at Dunnegan Park walking the trail, taking the children to a playground, or meeting family for a picnic. You can also make it a short stop. The 45-acre Bolivar park has room for each, with a mile-long gravel trail, a small lake, and four pavilions for rent.

A walking visit: plan for gravel

The City of Bolivar's park page describes a mile-long chat trail through the trees. Chat is a gravel surface. Shoes for an uneven path make more sense here than planning for a paved sidewalk.

If you have a short window, choose an out-and-back walk: head down the trail for part of your time, then turn around. You can enjoy a stretch of the park without making the full mile your goal.

For a stroller, walker, or wheelchair, ask about the surface and entry for the route you want to take. The city's page does not provide a full access map. A mile-long trail description cannot tell you whether each part works for your equipment.

A play visit: give the playground its own time

The city lists several playgrounds, along with benches and restrooms. For a visit with young children, the playground can be the plan. A trail walk can wait for another day or fit around the time you have left.

The lake and wet-weather stream add another place to pause. The city notes ducks, geese, and swans at the park. Watch from a distance, give the birds room, and keep children close near the water.

If restroom access is a key part of your plan, ask the city about the facilities for the day you will visit. Its amenity list does not give daily restroom hours.

A picnic visit: decide whether you need a pavilion

For a small picnic, pack lunch, water, and a bag for trash. If several households are meeting, settle on a meeting place before everyone heads to the park. "See you at Dunnegan" leaves quite a bit of room to look for each other.

For a planned group meal or event, use the city's pavilion reservation route. The park page links to four pavilions for rent. Follow that link to choose the space, date, and time, then review the price and rules in the booking system.

Before booking, ask about details your group needs, such as seating, power, and access. Save the confirmed reservation and share the exact pavilion with everyone coming. Add a way to reach the group if weather changes the plan.

The land has been a gift to Bolivar since 1923

The city dates the park to T.H.B. Dunnegan's land donation in 1923. More than a century later, the 45 acres still give people a place to walk, play, and share a meal.

That history belongs to an outing you can keep small. Bring a picnic, choose a stretch of trail, or let the playground fill the time you have.
